I am planning to buy either of the two. Still undecided..
If you are a first time dog owner, the Lab is probably the better choice. If you do get a GSD make sure you are willing and able to provide ongoing socialization and training.

Horaayy..there are 3 comment(s) for me so far ;)
As long as you socialize a GSD properly and spend quality time with it (take it to obedience training and for fun walks), then they can be the best of dogs. Super smart, easy to train and ONCE TRAINED PROPERLY, are very easy to control. HOWEVER, you must be a FAIR and CONSISTENT pack leader. The GSD will test you occasionally to see if you still "have what it takes"' to be the pack leader.
Labradors, from what I have seen at my local obedience club and in obedience trials, are also easily trained and controlled.
Both breeds meet your criteria, so I guess its up to you to decide which one you like best, whether it be for looks, color, build etc. Either way, you cannot go wrong.

Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Gsd's can be very loyal and headstrong but with the right training, can be very trainable but they need alot of mental exercise but give back all they get.
